Sciadopitys verticillata

Sciadopitys verticillata

Just bought on impulse. The tag says...slow growing. Not a pine at all. Japanese umbrella tree is now generally considered to be in its own family (Sciadopityaceae). The tree can be traced to the Triassic period.... the dinosaurs times.
It is called the "living fossil" together with Ginkgo Biloba, Dawn Redwood Metasequoia
Monkey Puzzle Tree (Araucaria araucana).
I have all these. Maybe there are more?

I always like the look of this in photos. I cant remember if the local botanical gardens have them, but I suspect they do. Especially the SF botanical garden that has a "Dinosaurs of plants" area. With those you mentioned and Gunnera's, Tree ferns, some larger types of Horsetails- Equisetums, cycads.
Many of those do just fine in Vancouver. I think of them along with the Magnolia's as those plants in Gondwonoland Klahanie that grew all the way to the then temperate Arctic Circle. Growing fast under 24 hour light in winter- dormant in the 24 hour (or so) dim and dark in winter.
None drought tolerant. Hmm,something to think about.

I would like to get hands on the Tree fern Stan. I have plenty of gunneras now and they are doing very well here.

klahanie:

Have you ever tried a Tasmanian tree fern? They tend to be the hardiest of the tree ferns. It likes lots of water and grows to about 25 feet, in time.

No Delonix1, but I would love to try it. I have a perfect spot for it.
