Looking Good DD. We have about a dozen Bonsai. Two of them must be 40 years old. Gerry cuts the roots back every few years and we prune some growth from them every year.

Looks good! I'd love to grow my own Bonsai but the first time I ever tried I had to leave it behind when I went to Spain in 1972. :-(( It was a Horse Chestnut tree 2 or 3 years old.

Fast forward more then 35 years & my daughter bought me a couple of Bonsai already formed on a couple of occasions for my birthdays.

Unfortunately I was unable to conserve them alive for more than a couple of years at most. Last year I told my daughter it would be best if she didn't buy me any more Bonsai. They are very expensive & she isn't in a situation to spend a lot of money on a special gift for me. I feel even worse about it not being able to keep them alive for more than a year or two.

We grew our two pines that are really old now, into Bonsai from seed. The main thing is to transfer them from a very small pot, (egg pot size) into bigger ones as they age and also cut the roots back every two years and prune them into shape as you go. There is a feed to feed them with and as you say, in the winter months give them some protection from the frost. Also make sure they get watered without making them overwatered. In the summer they need extra watering as they dry out quickly.

Lindak this is really the only decent one, we have tried doing it with other trees, but it has never worked, will pot this one on to a larger pot, you must put some photos on of your very old ones please.
HB this was from a seed, must be well over 30 years old now, so it should have some cones!!
Balcony, what a shame to lose all your plants, as you say they are so expensive....
Thanks K we had several self-setters but, this one had a twisted trunk, which made it more interesting....
