It is a cross between cucumber tree (M. acuminata) and Yulan magnolia (M. denudata). It was patented by the Brooklyn Botanical Garden in 1977

It looks (from the pictures) as a wonderful place to visit Bathgate. Magnolia Elizabeth is the first precocious yellow hybrid . Its name honors Elizabeth Van Brunt, a benefactor of BBG.
If course there are many yellow hybrids now but Elizabeth is the most celebrated. I have seen a picture of the one in BBG and it is magnificent. Mine is already a good size. I have just recently purchased another yellow..."Butterflies"
