I am thinking to fill the chimney pot with compost and plant the hosta directly into it. The only problem is it is an open ended pot so I should have to devise something to stop the compost from falling through the bottom. Although if it is to remain in its place it would not matter too much. Thoughts anyone?

Would a smaller pot fit down inside, or build up with pots (first one upside down if you know what I mean lol) then put your soil in? Not sure just a thought :-))

I would place a J cloth in the base of a suitable size plastic pot to fit the bottom of the chimney pot, that should keep any critters out and then fill with broken bits of polystyrene (lightweight stuff) before adding the soil/compost ready for planting. Can you tell I've done this before?!!!

We use a slightly smaller pot upside down, and fill any spaces with polystyrene.....saves on the compost......I see Daylily and Shirley have also used the same methods...... works for us..
