This is a pretty common sight here in San Diego. Many people love dragon fruit! Photo taken June 26, 2016.

They have been popular here for many years. I won my dragon fruit at a Plumeria Society Meeting in 2001. Old dragon fruit cacti can become monsters. There's one at Exotica Nusery in Vista that's more than 200' wide and a mounding 10' tall. It produces hundreds or maybe a thousand flowers when it blooms. I'm guessing it's been there for decades.

On youtube there are actually a few bay area vids on growing them- all over the yard.

It's so common to see front yards like this around here. It's getting crazy! I can see why they do it, though. They're drought tolerant and with this extreme drought nobody wants water-hungry grass.

You took the words out of my mouth. Something unknown just a few years ago..I see them around here. The people who grow them? Give those cacti all the room they want too.
