La Jolla Shores with tall Mexican Fan Palms

La Jolla Shores with tall Mexican Fan Palms

This was taken at La Jolla Shores, San Diego, CA. on my vacation. I wanted to escape the extreme heat at home...so we went to the beach. Well, it was 95ºF (35) with a heat index of about 105ºF (41ºC). It was super crowded and the ocean water was so warm it felt like a warm bathtub! So, you can see why it was so extremely busy! Photo taken July 22, 2016.

Too hot and too crowded, Delonix. Palms look nice.

It actually got a lot more crowded than you see here. Everybody thought they could escape the heat at the beach this day...unfortunately, it wasn't the case.

Sometimes being a northerner isn't so bad. Love your Jacarandas but couldn't take the heat and crowds.

I very rarely go to the beach when it's crowded or really hot. I prefer it when it's not so crowded. When we have really bad heatwaves everyone goes to the beach to cool down (it didn't happen this day)...so that means hundreds of thousands of people at the San Diego beaches. I couldn't believe it was this crowded on a Friday!

like that line of palms though... they lend a tropical aire...

There's a lot more species of palms there. There's so many tall old Kentia palms there, also. Kentia palms tolerate the salt air very well.

I think I tried to grow a kentia palm as a houseplant years ago... it did not do well and eventually succumbed. :-(

That's terrible! They're usually a fairly easy palm to grow indoors. I have several growing in the front yard close to the house. Some fronds were scorched from the heatwave. They grow relatively fast here. However, to become a large tree of 50' (16m) or taller they take many decades. The trees in the link below in the photo are most likely 80 to 90 plus years old.

It must be amazing to have a warm sea!!! On the odd occasion I go into our sea I expect to see ice burgs floating past its that cold even in summer!

Yes, the ocean temp has been above normal for the last several years. The ocean water has been averaging 77 (25C) degrees or more this summer. San Diego Bay has been averaging 80 (27C) degrees. It was almost 81 degrees a few days ago. Up in Northern California it's always cold averaging only around 58 degrees year-around. California typically has the colder current from Point Conception northward. Some of the coves in Northern California can have water temps up to 74 (23C) degrees during some years, though.
