Palm House in San Diego, CA

The Flame thrower palm stands out. I wanted one,but the room for it- and water- time has passed.

I'm not sure if that's a Chambeyronia or a Dictyosperma. The palms to the left is Pinanga coronata. This house used to have a very tall Phoenicophorium borsigianum for maybe 4 years or so; however, it died! I was surprised that it lived more than a year! It's an extremely tender palm for San Diego, especially since it's native to the very hot, humid Seychelles Islands.

That was a beautiful palm..you're right. Something they probably have at the Huntington in the conservatory.
I almost bought a dwarf Areca catachu at Oakland's famous nursery-pharmacy store about 8 or 9 years ago now.
I probably was right to not buy it..would have killed it long ago.

Yes, Phoenicophorium borsigianum is really not a palm for San Diego even though we have such a mild climate. I think what did it in was the hot, dry Santa Ana wind conditions. It doesn't tolerate dry air. It did look good for a long time, though.

Area catechu is a very tropical palm. It wouldn't do well indoors in dry air. It would like humid warm to hot conditions all year. Now, Areca triandra has been grown here successfully. It needs semi-shade in a protected area. I've seen some nice specimens here. Large specimens used to be relatively cheap, also.
