Its a Corylus maxima 'purpurea ' Lori ,purple leaved Hazel nut , funny thing is the squirrels don't steal the nuts from this shrub perhaps the colour conceals the nuts better than the green leafed variety ....

Now isn't that amazing!? I have pics of hazelnuts starting on the hazel hedge taken last spring... can't find them now! blasted squirrels! I shouldn't complain there were only two or three.
That colour is great! Hazel is such a spreader, but I've been thinning our hedge and not getting the results I was hoping for... (new growth and more nuts)... any hints?

We coppice our hazel shrubs Lori they then grow tall and straight the next year ,we use the cut poles to grow beans and peas up ... we never have the nuts from the green leafed variety the squirrels steal them away ,I can see a lot of nuts on them at the moment but they will be gone by the time they are ready to pick ...

Squirrel food... I wonder: speaking of old methods of keeping things "fresh", I wonder if there are old practices that keep some of the hazelnuts from being squirrel food?

At least your flower stems escaped the slugs and snails. Mine didn't - all the stems eaten through overnight!

Lori we have friend who collects hazel nuts walnuts etc. he then buries them in damp sand in buckets they last through the winter ,its no good unless the are properly ripe and the squirrels haven't had them ! , what a shame Keith I have several in pots I haven't planted them in the garden I might do next year ...
