Still not brillliant - I spent more time staring at it than trying to take photos!

I think it's a good photo,Sue..what lovely markings it has ...

Yes they are beautiful creatures.

I remember googling it once before Snoop - a lovely place to have nearby, apart from the adders...

I've got no room to talk

Think it's a grass snake and what a great picture. Moment to treasure. We had one in the garden when we moved to our first home on the I.O.Wight in the 1960's. The garden was a jungle.

Yes you tend to get a bit less wildlife when you tidy up...
But I did find one under a tarp a few days ago enjoying the warmth .

Hi Sterra, they like somewhere to hide under, also compost heaps too.

Snap! I emptied a compost bin today and there were four slowworms in it...

The snake in the pic was indeed in a compost bin.

We used to get slowworms too Sterra. I used to pick them up.

The cats catch them - they look funny with one dangling from their mouth like puffin with fish. (Hate it when they do that...)
Where did you live Lindak? I'm from Sheffield and we never saw any reptiles at all up there.

Our first home was on the Isle of Wight at Lake. We had a long garden, attached to our semi detached house, and we took on an allotment just down the road from us, near to a golf course. The Allotment was a jungle too at first, until we gradually dug it over and cultivated it.

Sounds just the place for slowworms!
A big change from the IoW to Derbyshire!

I miss the sea Sterra but years ago Gerry had to change his job so Derbyshire was welcoming, and here we've been for quite some years now, but we love it here.

I used to love trips out to Derbyshire when I was little, especially to Stoney Middleton at cowslip time. We lived on the western edge of Sheffield so it wasn't very far to go. I have an old school friend who lives in Eyam now.
I used to say the only thing missing was the sea. Now I say the only thing missing here is the moorland and the limestone rocks.

That dirty no good snake in the grass!
Times have changed. We all wish we could see a snake in the grass. Or,in my case gravels.

Wow. I would have been so scared to find this in my garden! It's very beautiful though. ?

We used to have them in the garden, when it was wild and untamed, never see them now....

Green grass!..Been awhile since I've seen that. The snake is nice too.

That's sad Stan. i think I would go dotty without our lush greenery but I guess its what you're used to. Maybe things will be greening up for you now if its rained.

Glad to see its got a head, with that beady eye looking at you.

Had the well known black forked tongue too...

Great photo. I like snakes but I've never found one in my garden, tho' there are places close by which are good for them, perhaps they stay there , alongside the small river in the vegetation.

We have adders on the cliff tops but I've never seen one.
You might get grass snakes near your river - they enjoy swimming sometimes.
