Nekbudu Fig is a tropical tree from Africa. It grows very well here in San Diego and grows pretty large. It has a huge root system so it's not too commonly planted outside of parks because of the gigantic surface roots. Photo taken in Balboa Park, San Diego, CA. on Aug. 11, 2016.

It native to the tropical areas of South Africa. It's one of the more tropical species of Ficus. Yes, they love water and those roots will find it, too. :>)

A South African tree. Must be native to canyons or wet areas. Those roots look like they can seek water!
