Its only my second Summer with this Beauty and it Amazes me, The Trunk is small but the Leaves are huge, 2 new fronds have appeared in the last 2 weeks, "Fantastic", Theres a couple of twisted fronds because I was too slow removing the fleece, but i havent the heart to cut them off :) I think its my Favourite plant in the garden...I might buy another for my tropical border next year,.. Dee..

Thanks a lot, appreciated..

I have noticed with my young tree fern that it is highly sensitive to obstructions, if a frond touches anything it will twist to avoid it so I had to move mine into a more open space.

Hi, Love this tree I'm gonna have to get one,, how easy or hard are they to look after??
1 Sep, 2008
Hi Rammy, Not hard at all, they like a shadyish spot, where mine is, does'e get sunshine in the afternoon, lots of water, I water the Trunk, and i overwinter it wrapped in fleece in my unheated greenhouse, I paid £25 for it at B&Q,but this time of year they sell them off cheaper, The Trunk grows really slow, but the fronds are Huge, and i think its an Amazing Tree,...Dee..

Oh Rammy thats brilliant, i need to see it :) mine is still in the same pot as i bought it in, so next year ill repot it,ill ask for advice tho, because its only my second summer with this Beauty,Also i think because of the weather ive had 4 new fronds in the last 4 weeks :0, fronds are the leaves that unfurl from the centre of the Trunk, if you dont have a Ghouse, when you put it away for winter, tie the leaves up with a shoelace or similar and wrap fleece round the whole tree, then place it near your house for extra shelter, Water it from the top of the Trunk, at the minute you probably dont need to, but also water it every few weeks in winter, This is advice i had from others last year and it worked a Treat, Phew i went on a bit there Rammy haha.......Dee....

hi dee, i don't have a ghouse i suppose a garage is not suitable? what do you mean by a fleece??hope this doesn't sound a stupid question...thanks again!!
3 Sep, 2008
Not a stupid question at all rammy, ive asked some in my time believe me...Hortracultural Fleece, Sorry for spelling, you can buy it at GCentres or wilkies woolies, It comes in sheets of thin fleece to protect your tender plants, worth buying for your Fab Tfern...

Beautiful tree fern Dee...... they are a favourite of mine too. I bought one a few years ago.... called him ‘Tricky Dicky’ because I was so afraid of keeping him through the first winter..... but he survives fine now with his winter jacket on. I leave the leaves on, cut them off the following year when they’ve turned brown, but by this time the news seasons have grown. Marion

I know what you mean about worrying about him, first winter for me last year, i was constantly checking on him, but im not so worried now, hes a toughy..

Good to see you're Tree Fern is doing so well Dee. They grow like weeds here in NZ, in fact I just chopped one down which was growing in the wrong place and am using the trunk as garden edging, LOL. Unreal, hey?

Jenn, you Murderer. hahaha. my heart is beating like the clappers at the thought of you chopping it down :))) Do you know how expensive they are here? ..... Dee...
28 Oct, 2008
*winks at Dee* Yip, I sure do know how expensive they are in the UK. I love watching the UK Gardening Shows on Sky TV. I think the UK have the best gardening shows, even better than the States, LOL. I've taped them all so I can watch them over and over again. At the moment they have zilch Kiwi gardening shows here, it stinks I tell ya ! I also watch The Aussie Home + Garden Show on Thursday nights, mainly for their 15 minutes of gardening out of the hour. The rest is cooking and decorating. I am utterly SICK TO DEATH of home decorating shows on our TV right now. Grrrr
