Tall Banana with late flowering.. (Musa)

I'm no expert on banana growing, but this is a large banana plant that must have full sized sweet fruit. Only, flowering this late in the year must be a wait until spring until the ripen. My guess.

Those tall varieties are so vulnerable to being blown over in winter. I've had many with bananas blown over in winter here.

Yep,I worry about anything that ripens in winter. I had Babaco that would reach peak ripe..in December. Every single year,a big storm would knock off large fruit.
Its not a good tasting fruit any ways and I took it out eventually.
Because HD had the Malaysian guava so low priced,I took a chance. Right now they are large grape sized-2.

Yes, it's always a concern for winter storms.

I had a Babaco papaya when I lived in Hayward. I gave it away to a member of the RFGS (rare fruit growers society). I didn't like the fruit. I like Mountain papaya better, as an ornamental.

I had a local tell me that his Guava's came out pretty sweet- planted against a wall, and not so sweet planted in the open.
So,I know well the bay area needs that help with Tropical fruits. Its a good thing my Ice Cream is not tall..it benefits too.

I have seen tall Raja Pura posted from Fremont that looked beautiful- large stalks of full sized banana's..but even he said its hit and miss. His were in the open in a big yard.

All must be better then Supermarket quality.

That's strange because tropical guava doesn't like a lot of heat. It prefers cooler, warm weather. I used to give my tropical guava fruit away in Hayward (because I don't eat it) my neighbor used to say it was very sweet! It was close to a wall, though.

Ice Cream bananas are a medium-sized stalk plant. It usually grows to 10 - 13' tall. They're pretty good about not blowing over. The trunks are very thick.

The smaller banana leafs dont shred as much..so a bit more attractive to the eye even if it doesn't mean a thing as far as taste.

I've had really good ice cream bananas here in January. They are a very good-producing banana. My Ice Cream bananas are facing north in the front yard, also.
