Beautiful arent they. Glad you've secured future plants, certainly worth it. My Amistad is flowering but S. black and blue has no flowers yet.

Neither Amistad or black and blue flowering here......

I had Amistad a few years ago but i lost it one cold winter...:<(

Motty it is not reliably hardy..

Should yours be flowering soon Dd? It's such a shame some of the Salvia are not hardy but cuttings seem simple.

My Black and Blue is in a pot in the greenhouse after being eaten by slugs and snails several times at the beginning of the season, slimy creatures grrr.
This ones doing great this is only half of it, it was hard to find stems with no buds for cuttings!

Oh dear, poor black and blue, so it's not flowering lol. ?
Your Amistrad is a beauty, far more flowers than mine. I've taken cuttings and I'm thinking if I want to keep it, I will have to lift and put in the greenhouse over winter again.

No no flowers :-(
Yes think I'll dig this up as well , shouldn't think it'll like the heavy clay its planted in when winter comes!, The slugs are already munching on the cuttings in the greenhouse, well they were before I put pellets in the pots ooooops.

Mine is in clay too. I literally dug the whole root ball up last year and dumped in a huge pot. Darn slugs and snails. I use pellets in pots too in the coldframe and greenhouse. Blinkin caterpillars had a fill too inthe coldframe last month.

It has been a disastrous year here for slugs and snails....... just about to dig up all our Hostas and put them in pots and make a feature of them.......we can keep an eye on them in a corner away from the borders!! more work!!:-!:-!

So frustrating isn't it. I think snails are worse than slugs here. The hostas are certainly safer in pots aren't they.

I hope so Dawn took us both all afternoon, some were down to one leaf!! Now all potted, pelleted and the tops gravelled, only two blue ones were completely unscathed!
Re black and blue the plants are enormous but cannot see any flowers...... wondering if they have received too much feed!!

22 Sep, 2016

Oh dear, at least they are salvageable. I don't feed the Salvia, beats me, plants sometimes have a mind of their own.

Amistad is one hell of a good doer - mine has been blooming since June.
My rather old Black and Blue seems to have run out of puff and will not bloom this year but Black and Bloom is looking good (I've just posted a photo).

Thanks Meanie, I will take a look. Do you propagate from seed or cuttings?

23 Sep, 2016

Cuttings. In all the years that I've grown Black and Blue it has only ever produced six seeds and these produced significantly inferior forms. You can also find root runners near the plant that can be used for propagation.

24 Sep, 2016

Thanks for that advice Meanie.

My Black and Blue was from you Meanie it's a huge plant now I've left it in the ground the past two years , but it just had to he rescued this year , flippin slugs chewing it to the ground , it was just being smothered by other things and worried I'd lose it,needed a humungous pot lol .

Simbad - you're Black and Blue was one of the first batch of root runners I grew.
