We do grow a lot of tropical shrubs, trees and plants here in San Diego. Most you probably can't grow outside there.

Yes, the flowers are pretty spectacular. It's unfortunate it only flowers once a year in fall.
Many of the others I have in the same family flower sometimes throughout the year. Odontonema callistachyum, Megaskepasma erythrochlamys (Braizilian Red Cloak) which is flowering now, Justicia carnea (Brazilian Plume Flower) which just finished flowering and my winter and spring flowering Eranthemum pulchellum (Tropical blue sage) from Sri Lanka.
