Heron landed on a neighbours roof after a downward gust of wind.

We get one now and again landing in the river at the back of the garden. I laugh to myself now when I think of the first time I saw one here back in the early nineties. I thought it was a stork!!

Ha-ha! My niece has a lovely garden pond, very well stocked and she had an invasion of "Pteradactyls" (cranes/herons) who perched on her roof and nearly cleaned out her pond of expensive koi! She went to a garden centre and found a deterrent... a jointed plastic crocodile! LOL... I still smile! I love cranes they are gorgeous birds and their flight is amazing to watch. Lucky you, LindaK!

This Heron flies across sometimes as we have the river down the road HB.
Thorneyside a heron took some of our fish when we used to live just down the road.
A couple of days ago now the wind whisked up lots of leaves, at the same time this Heron got caught in the strong eddy and his wings were all over the place but he just managed to land on my neighbours roof that backs on to our back garden in the next road. Then he looked stunned for a while and eventually took off again. Just after that happened, I went to the front and saw a seagull come whizzing down with his wings all over the place and then he suddenly managed to regain himself and glide off. Strange...The wind must have been coming over the brow of the hill and acting like a strong eddy wave.

Even my small garden has been targeted. When I came home from uni for my surgery there were two, one has wiped out next doors pond and one was ready to go for my fish- now the water lilies are done the water is largely open and so I've put a net on- the dog used to chase it off but he's not up to chasing around these days

Over here the cranes/herons winter in florida and along the gulf coast to Texas.. alligators are their natural predators...the plastic croc is weighted and jointed so that the current in the pond makes it appear to be swimming! This all happened a few years ago...and I've heard no further complaint. apparently it works... :-) a very passive control.

I wonder who thought up that idea Lori. It obviously works well.
Dandanspond...it's not nice to find your fish missing. We placed a net over our pond after the heron attack ....years ago now....We had a sloping end that we left clear for the frogs etc. to get in and out of the pond.

I don't think it was thought up so much as observed, Linda.
