I feel gyped. I have bought black lava at rock centers that IS black. This I bought bagged at Home Depot..and as soon as it dried it looked ashen. Should I remove and go to red like I used have (you've seen the red now mixed n in photos) covering the front.
I thought black fronting a house thats white as mine..and green plants would be nice.."modern"
Not so sure now.

They can grow large. My neighbor Klahanie who I just met once down the block had one of the huge ones like you would see in a botanical garden. It and some nice large Cereus cacti were there when he bought the home.
One day I drive by...everything was gone. He hated cactus.
Then later,they moved.
The new owners? Planted Queen palms and Aloes. Those cacti were one owner from having been appreciated again.
Now mine? I had them in front..where the usual problems of not enough full sun and the big Magnolia kept mine slow growing. Then,I moved them to the backyard worried since my front yard was being ..uh,..exploited by bad people. So they just got rooted when my tenants moved and took their bad friends with them.
Now,with the Mango and other tree's filling in that small back yard..back the barrels go to the front. I've pruned the Magnolia to let in more light and the barrels have nothing at all fronting them.
I hope they are there permanent.

Hi Stan. I've added this to GoYpedia Rocks and Stones.
Looks attractive. In my front garden, I have some grey small 'pebbles' which look nice, but even better when wet, because they then turn shiny black.

Thank you Terra!
I have to get one up of them wet.
But they do sell black lava here. If I had known this was really gray lava sold wet in a bag. Live and learn. I should get a sack of the smaller black lava and maybe mix it with this?
The whole color and plant design part of gardening is not my strong part. I'm mostly foliage and shapes.

Hi Stan...
why not buy some of the black lava and just sprinkle it on top of the grey... no need to mix it in ...
I think you have more talent than you realise with all aspects of garden design.

See who else is growing Echinocactus grusonii (Golden barrel cactus).
See who else has plants in genus Echinocactus.

I like it Stan. Maybe not modern but looks so natural, like it belongs. Plant a Zwartkop aeonium or mondo grass in front or on side if you want black.
Your barrels look good are they slow growers?
