There is the Kleim's hardy gardenia but even they aren't suitable for my area. Winters are way too harsh in New York. They are best kept indoors but will make a nice patio plant in the warmer months.

I know some varieties like Kleim's Hardy is very hardy. I guess they don't tolerate snow, though.
Gardenia thunbergia is one of my favorites. It become a tree and isn't hardy at all in most cooler climates. It's pretty common here and has large flower and a big fruit like a potato. LOL! I've posted several pics of it on GoY in the past.

We get those warm days and cold nights in early Spring. That causes the buds to drop off. It never really looks nice after that.

Yes, it prefers mild nights and warm days to set and hold the flower buds. The climate is perfect for Gardenias here in San Diego; however, the hard water and horrible soil is not. Although, with this being said there's many large Gardenia shrubs and trees growing around San Diego. I have posted several on GoY in the past. :>))
Gardenia has a very long flowering season here...usually from: March through November and sometimes into December. I've even seen flowers on some in February.

Isn't Gardenia a borderline shrub outdoors, there? I know they're really hardy, however, I don't remember if they tolerate any snow...or do they?
