These are beautiful. No matter how hard I try and carefully place the bulbs in a bowl they never seem to come up as I planted them. They always seem to migrate to one side of the bowl. Do you turn your bowls. I noticed today I have 2 I, 'Blue Note' out in a pot. They are next to one another and the others are straggling behind them.

These are displayed to absolute perfection Brian. I have never seen them looking this beautiful before. They don't look great in soil, but with the gravel...wonderful!

I do like these Iris I found this packet being sold off for £1 end of October But try as I may They are hardly worth trying to keep for a second year in my garden or pot
I think possibly a very deep clay pot may have some success where by the roots at the bottom could could be kept moist and alive until summer but allowing the top half to dry out that way the bulbs might build up instead of drying up.
just thinking out loud ,would not wager money on it though.

What a bargain. At that price you don't mind treating them as annuals but I was searching for an answer to this problem and found this advice on Broadleigh Bulbs website; 'The bulbs are planted in the autumn in small groups of 5 – 10 bulbs 4 – 6″ deep. They are traditionally grown as rock garden bulbs in a sunny situation but the dry soil usually causes the bulbs desiccate and to split into tiny bulblets which will then take some years to regain flowering size. Extra deep planting and feeding with a low Nitrogen fertiliser is often recommended to overcome this. However bulbs that are planted in a cooler, but equally well drained, position among shrubs do not split up in the same way and will continue to flower year after year. They can be grown in light grass under trees and are excellent subjects for growing in containers and make attractive pot plants to bring indoors once the buds appear.' They also say they will grow where you find snowdrops succeeding so mine are going in under the trees in the front garden when they finish flowering. I have some in the pots at the front door and they are returning for the third time.

I agree Sue, I am going to try some with our snowdrops, will hunt some out at our local GC.......I have tokens still to spend!!

Beautiful display , I must have something right for once because mine come up every year ,some in gravel ,some round the base of trees ,some in soil under shrubs whatever the reason I'm happy with them ...

Amy that bears out the advice I read on Broadleighs website so I will definitely try it out. Bjs I think you are right about not planting bulbs out now. I was thinking I would leave them until the foliage has died off by which time the weather might have improved. As they are in a pot they can safely stay there until I get around to doing the planting.
