This is the first time I've seen flowers on this bulb in almost 14 years that I've lived here. Every winter I see leaves but no flowers. Photo taken Feb. 14, 2017.

I see them flowering all around San Diego. I guess just not enough sun and water in this spot. Not sure how long the bulbs have been in the ground. They were there before I moved in.

I'm still not sure why this is the first time its flowered. I think I will move the bulbs to more sun, though.

Maybe they need some fertilizer...
They do seem to like that. I have lots of leaves too. Balcony is a great source on this site.

Many genera in the Amaryllidaceae family is very widely grown outdoors here. I don't think many get much fertilizer. I think they love the sun, though. This spot is pretty shaded, especially during winter.
I'm guessing this is a species of Vallota (Cyrtanthus), they love sun. I believe Hippeastrum is much larger. I've seen mass-plantings of Hisppeastrum in my neighborhood.
