Unhappy Papaya.. (Carica papaya (Common Pawpaw))

The smallest of a trio has fallen over. The second largest dropped a few leaves. The largest fruit bearing plant has stem rot. I thought it would have fallen over within days when I first saw this...but its still standing and might just send out a new side shoot or branches. Or,it might still just fall over. Hope for the best.

Oh dear, fingers crossed for a recovery.

That's such a shame! It is amazing it has lasted so long with all the rain there this year. I think it would tolerate the cool more than all that rain. I had a Hawaiian Solo papaya that had this problem back in December of 2010. We had records rains that year in December.

Wettest winter since 1997,so Its hard to say now. First we had the driest period ever, followed by near the polar opposite wettest season on record.
What they do in an average winter is still up in the air.
Its still standing. Maybe it will live and go on from the stump that/s left- branch out.
Plus- the second largest is good- still in leaf mostly. We might have a dry March...hope so!

Start some new seedling soon. They need to be replaced every 3 to 5 years, anyway. Maradols seem to live longer than any papaya, here. I had one that lived and bore fruit for 10 years. It collapsed one day when I came home from work. The sow bugs eventually eat the trunks.

December 2010 was the wettest since 1964. My Maradol papayas didn't get affected, though. It was just one Hawaiian 'Solo' papaya. It was just a small patch of rot on the side of the papaya plant; however, I decided to cut it down.
