I bought this lovely blousy tulip last year, and even when it was near it's end( which it was in the large pic) it was beautiful, my OH stored them and replanted them, and they are nothing like last year's, see small picture, anyone else had this problem?

Hi
Still looks great I thought a rose at first , it may be a case the bulb has lost a lot of energy the 1st year flowering , and if like me with tulips they need to be replaced every second year as they either dont flower or just dont grow back.
I doubt a virus as this normally causes a streaking in the flower.

Because we have quite wet winters, the bulbs rot in the ground, that is why we lift them......
Siris it is nothing like it was last year..... just an ordinary tulip, same colour, and that's where the similarity ends!
Gnarly you could well be right, it was in flower for ages last year, in fact it looked gorgeous when it was on its last legs...so will chuck it this time.....

I have the hole dug larger and tip in gravel under the bulb Dottydaisy to prevent them rotting if this helps you for the future.

I think the single one looks nice anyway.

Still a nice looking flower even if it doesn't look much like it did last year!
I find that Tulips on the balcony tend to "shatter" into dozens of tiny bublets that can't be stored during the summer (better still are not worth storing!). The few years I've planted them I haven't had good results the 2nd year. I have had some in a strawberry planter for about 3 or 4 years but they gradually disappear. This year a few have sprouted but only one withered looking flower stem put in a appearance & even that has now gone. As I have a Fuchsia planted in the strawberry planter as well I shan't bother taking out the bulbs that have grown this year. I'll just leave them there to do their "own thing" - live or die.

Balcony we have some tulip bulbs that are five or six years old and still doing well, whilst others, two years is their max!
Thanks FF......

Never been successful with tulips after the second year DD. Stopped growing them, but it's lovely to see them in other people's gardens.
