Weigela

Weigela

This Weigela and another similar but paler pink, were here when I came to live here in 1993. Now the Clematis montana growing through it has finished flowering, I think a hard prune is the order of the day.

I prune out about 1/3 of the stems of my variegated Weigela each year.

Thorneyside, yours looks lovely. I'm only just learning the ropes about Weigela as inherited it with the garden. Had read that 1/3 pruning was good for them.

It's the montana that needs the prune I think Siris.
Jen, the flowers next year come on stems it makes this year, like Hydrangeas, so be careful what you prune.

Beautiful display.

Also if the plant is very old and getting out of hand I prune out a couple of misplaced stems, very low down, sacrificing next years' flower stems for regeneration for the future.

Thanks, my problem is previous owner planted some really lovely shubs but then neglected them for years. Have had to be quite ruthless with some realising that might loss them flowering for a year to get them back under control and in better condition. Last year was one a climbing rose that had to take down to 1/3 as was in such a bad way. My next one is a rhododendron that is so leggy as everything had grown over it.
