Amaryllis

Its a beauty love the colour feeding can produce all foliage no flowers just typical they get ignored then flower.

That's just what Karen and I were saying. It's almost as if they do it to spite us. It's lovely though. I bet you're glad you didn't put it on the compost heap now.

Hi Sheila, well done, but I think what you have is a cultivar of Hippeastrum, which is native to central and south america, and flowers mainly from winter to spring, and are mostly frost tender, Amaryllis is native to south africa, and is a genus of 1 species, flowering in autumn, and are frost hardy.
There's also a difference in how they should be planted, Amaryllis should be planted just below the soil, and Hippeastrum just up to the shoulder of the bulb. Sorry to be pedantic, but they're 2 different plants, although they're in the same family. and are more often sold erroniouly as Amaryllis, Derek.

Hi Feverfew, you're not alone, most people call them Amaryllis, including the people that sell them, which is 1 of he reasons that some people find it difficult to grow them, especially new gardeners, they look up Amaryllis for advice on cultivation, not realising that they have a Hippeastrum, whose cultural requirements are different, and it isn't their fault, because they've been told Amaryllis, Derek.
