Yes they're a real fave of the bees, Tbp! This is the kitchen clump but I have 4 others (smaller) which I intend to transplant under my apple trees this summer. I read in an old companion planting book that an underplanting of chives (somehow) discourage scab on apples. Worth a try, I think.

A lovely big clump. Mine is about to be split up and serve as companion plants too, I want to plant them in between the roses to see if they manage to keep the greenfly at bay...living in hope!

Well I know garlic does and onions so perhaps its worth a try. My friend grows garlic in pots next to her roses she just get galic from the shop and plants a clove from it plant on the longest day garlic will be ready by the shortest day or plant on the shortest day it will be ready by the longest day. Or I use garlic powder by drenching my roses with water and garlic mix.

What a good way to grow garlic and remember thrupennybit, thats next week then and ready for xmas?? Thanks. I've done the garlic drench with my roses but coming out onto the terrace in the morning and being hit in the face by that garlic smell wasn't a great success, but the greenfly didn't like it either..
