I think it was when I bought a bonsai at a Japanese Nursery in Cornwall many years ago, and picked up a leaflet at the same time. ('Proper' bonsai are wired to form a pleasing shape, but I don't like to risk cutting into the bark, so just prune them judiciously.)
I was always finding tree seedlings in the garden (Ash, Cotoneaster, Apple, Hawthorn, Silver Birch, Beech etc.) so just decided to pot them up and keep them small, using gritty, free-draining compost.
A little book that I bought said to prune the roots in Spring - every year or two - and not let the trees dry out. They are kept outside all year, and that's about it really.

Thanks Sandra and Julia - they're very easy really, and are in fact neglected much of the time!
