It's actually very red Karen, my camera never seems to capture the red in flowers. My favourite is my cerise pink one, have you tried the S macrophylla variety Karen, they are tough.

I'm not sure tbh Dawn. I had a few different ones in my last garden, but even there the wind broke them. And we have much worse winds here because we are exposed and quite a lot higher.

The salvia I have are tough, small leaved and open habit, flower for ages. I find the fleshy leaved ones flop.

I think you'll find yours also have brittle stems. Do you not really get strong winds there?

Yes, it gets windy but they probably dont get the full force where they are,, now Stipa gigantia always gets snapped stems.

This is one of my favourite, it is so difficult to get the colour right, it is more red, I agree Dawn....

Very red aren't they DD, the flowers are small but the amount makes up for the size.

Yes, I had to remove my Stipa....waste of time growing it. It just looked a mess.

So did we Karen......lack of space unfortunately!

Yes, that too.

When I drive to work I see a perfect Stipa gigantea in someone’s front garden, year after year, on a main road, it’s perfect, so annoying lol

I like salvia but it doesn't like me... boo hoo. This is a real zinger.

Oh dear Lori, what a shame

I really have tried with the salvia. GoY friends have sent me seed and I've placed it where I thought it would be happiest but ...no luck. perhaps too much moisture? the only exception is the culinary purple sage which I've finally found a spot for and it seems to be happy. It's bloom is not profuse or colourful (pink) but it's among other garden herbs and not a display plant. (it's pretty enough, just very useful) Hopefully I can keep it alive through another season.

I have the culinary Salvia too for their ornamental value. Did you know you can take cuttings just by placing in a glass of water, roots appear in about a week, I have Salvia purpuracens, Tricolour and Icterina.

Ah yes... I think perhaps I'll take some cuttings for over the winter just in case. Thanks for the reminder Dawnsaunt! We had a killing frost last night but the coming week is supposed to be warm and wet!... I give up on trying to do anything as I used to. I'm leaving my perennials, not cutting or moving a thing til spring. I'll just give it a bit of a raking and maybe put the leaves on the garden. Wood first... the garden (and the salvia) will keep. :-)

Good plan Lori. I put them on the kitchen window sill. Frost!!!
No doubt we will be getting them soon too :-(

I can't remember ever seeing one as orange as this. The range of colours in the Salvias is tremendous isn't it. I wish I could grow them, but it is just too windy here for them.
