Codiaeum variegatum 'Mammy' - Croton

Codiaeum variegatum 'Mammy' - Croton (Codiaeum variegatum 'Mammy' - Croton)

My Mammy Croton is growing very well this year in its new big pot. It loves the larger pot. It's been in this spot for at least 6 years. Photo taken Sept. 6, 2017.

Yes, except for last summer (2016) when the severe drought took its toll on it, and it lost about 50 percent of its leaves. It's coming back really good this year. YAY! :>))

It certainly looks great now Andy so pleased its coming back so good for you sounds a hardy plant.

Yes, I'm so glad it looks so much better than summer of 2016. It's actually a very tender tropical shrub. It appears to really like this spot, though (as long as it receives enough water).

You shall have to fill those containers up Andy?

It's come on by leaps & bounds since that photo of it in 2011!

Mommy Mammy is a very nice specimen. I never see any in soucal front yards on Google.
I would rather have one of those then a potted Coconut. One will look like any other palm...nothing is like Crotons.

Balcony,

Yes, it's done pretty well except for last year.

You most likely won't see any on Google. They tend to be grown in semi-shade here under trees. They don't like the full California sun. I see quite a few crotons grown under trees here. They love the semi-shaded conditions.

I'm amazed this one is doing so well in so much hot sun. It does get afternoon shade, though.

Ahrr yes I remember this it reminded me of a fire with all those colours.

26 Jun, 2018

Yes, some are even brighter.

27 Jun, 2018

I like this.

27 Jun, 2018

I like them, also. :>)) I wish I had more. I just don't have any more room. Also, with the horrible drought I can't water.

28 Jun, 2018

They are sold as houseplants here in the UK! I've never grown one though. :(

28 Jun, 2018

That's probably one of the largest in soucal. I know many try and I bet very few last and thrive like this one of Delonix's.

I know the feeling on both Andy I ve not any room left either and with this heat here the water company has sent me a text asking to use less water while a gang of teenage boys are opening up the Hydrants damaging them they started in one area here the other day they opened one out side my house which flooded the lane it was going for nearly an hour .

Balcony,

It's grown as a houseplant here, also. It tends to get a lot of spider mites here, though.

It does pretty well in a good protected spot here in San Diego with water and semi-shade. I've seen some large, healthy ones outdoors here.

Stan,

I'm sure there's a lot bigger ones growing around besides my plant.

Penny,

I saw you're having some warm weather (or hot for the UK lol). Just giving you a bad time. LOL! :>)) The weather you're having in the UK is the normal weather for here, this time of year. The forecast for later next week shows temps in the upper 90's F or upper 30's C. here! Yuck! I don't like that hot weather! It's been so comfortable this summer, for far. I knew the 'July Fry' would be coming! Ugh! :>((

Near 90f today after mid 80's yesterday. So,we are on a nice run of "tropica" weather. Of course the 4th looks like a typical one..some fog and 70f..then the week after looks warm again.

Yep and my brugmansia has flowers coming haha. 84.5 here today and they say at present they cant see it changing for quite a while . I ve had text from the water board not to use much water sprinklers are banned no hose pipes either I read in the news tgey say switch off tap when brushing teeth take short showers in stead of baths cut down on laundry . All this makes me laugh they let in far to many people for what we have even fir land mass when we were young it was bath once a week top and tail every day then they say we should bath ir shower every day which skin specialist will tell you bathing or showering every day is taking the oils out of your skin which protects it from the likes of skin cancer through sun bathing. Then they bring in automatic washing machines which use a lot more water than tge twin tub ones we used years ago. Did you see my new blog which is so comical beyond belief authorities dont care about wasting water least they would stop these gangs.

Good luck with next month you ll need it with that heat .

UK hotter then my part of the bay area..its been 70's all July so far. 75f feels nice. I think I can coach good growth...but 80f is the magic number for tropicals.

5 Jul, 2018

We're expecting super hot weather here on Friday through Sunday...maybe 107ºF (42ºC) on Friday or Saturday.

5 Jul, 2018

The 10 day for Hayward is "near 80f". Upper 70's. Actually that's nice. Warm enough being its all sunny days. Nobody complains at 77-78f. They do say inland will be near triple digits this weekend.
Bruce ave, was on the KPIX news again..yep, the house that was a shell selling for 2 or 3 hundred G over asking price.
Actually it is a good deal. I have to go by there every now and then..and its always warmer, quieter, and then you have Mission San Jose and Palms and Coffee shops down the road. I always get a kick out of the palm and Auracaria oasis in that valley...then the palms again down the main street..then the palms around MSJ.
Beats what I leave behind.

Stan,

It's absolutely been sweltering here! UGH! Even though the temps yesterday were a few degrees lower the temps stayed above 84 degrees most of the night. I think I saw 4 am it was 78 degrees. This morning it's already about 85 degrees at 9:00 a.m. YUCK!!!

Mission San Jose is definitely one of the beautiful palmy neighborhoods which give a good tropical feel. I loved living there!

You wouldn't believe how quickly my Mammy Croton is growing. I can't believe how large the leaves are now. The leaves are starting to turn colors, also. I've been spraying it down once a day in this horrible heat, too.
