These are really spectacular palms. Actually the ones that have no trunk or very little stand out even more as the taller palms lose some scale. Up close they are huge.

Is it growing in Hayward? It has become a very popular palm here in San Diego. The problem with most urban gardens, they're too small to accommodate the massive size of this palm.

I know the silver-white variety is pretty tough. Didn't know how well it would grow up there. I know it doesn't like freezing temps. The green form is really tropical. I see it growing here on occasion.

Its near Southland,Calaroga. They grow here..if you can find them for sale.
I planted one many years ago..Gophers ate it in one week. After my growing that out for two years in a pot.

Since they take little water not being rainforest palms, more should be seen one day.

Felt like it..especially Penny because you could see his shallow tunnel go straight to that palm.
I never had the problem until 15 years ago, when old homes were knocked down and that left the empty lot next door. Its been a huge problem since.
The cats catch some..but never all.

I always felt that Bismarckia could grow up there. I always wanted to grow one in Mission San Jose, Fremont. However, at the time it was $125.00 for a small gallon-size palm! (that was here in San Diego where I got most of my plants when I lived up north). What at difference a two decades make. Now, here you purchase big 15 gallon Bismarckia palms for 35 to 45 dollars at some of the norther San Diego nurseries.

I know gophers love Madagascan palms. I think they're sweet to them. I had so many problems with the gophers eating the Dypsis decaryi palms! I had 3 in the ground in Fremont.

I have far more plants in pots then I wish. But many were in ground and I was able to save them after Gophers ate all the roots. Gophers seem to really go after anything tropical. I never see a hardy plant fall over. Hardy plants seem to have some gopher resistance. Magnolia,Ash,Euonymous..never touched. Cacti are ignored.
But your typical palm is a feast. Ti plants too.

There is a reason King and Howea palms are all over the state..Gophers do seem to ignore them. I had Gophers eat 20 year old clumps of Cat palms around the big Howea and the smaller one in front too. Left the Howea's alone.

You shall have to get a ferret and send him down that hole. Thats what we do here they naturally kill rodents.

It is amazing how much gophers love palm roots!

Ferrets are against the law to have in California.

Perhaps like many here think the UK is thd 51st state of America lol.

3 Nov, 2017

It could be...or we're the 51 states of the U.K. lol

4 Nov, 2017

lol laughing aside you would be better off if you were the 51st state of the UK not many would be killed by guns and you would get the NHS which the world envies.
