Yes at least 8 feet tall with the roots submerged nice effect with the plumes

I see some kind of reed grass which grows wild here. It grows to more than 8' tall, though. Not sure which species it is.

I was watching a documentary the other day which said it is edible - good to know if you are stuck in the boonies.

Yes, very good news. So many plants are edible. It may surprise you.
I'm lucky, because many of the super foods are from the tropics and can be grown here in San Diego. A few examples: Moringa oleifera (All parts of this tree is edible), Psidium guajava (tropical guava) leaves and fruit, Papaya leaves and fruit, mango leaves and fruit. Yellow mangosteen (Garcinia xanthochymus) is becoming extremely sought-after here for it's extremely high anti-oxidant properties. Unfortunately, the purple mangosteen can only be grown in the extremely hot tropics (not San Diego)
