I cut it down..but the base was too fat for the bowsaw. Now,I see this- a new leaf! Well,if it comes back smaller- fine!

No,this one Ster is purely ornamental. It doesn't even pup. Flowers and dies. I think they are tissue cultured. Now,the green form that this cultivar came from must grow inedible seedy banana's. Its also a much larger plant. Probably the largest banana plant you will ever see. Again, this is not a tropical heat loving banana so on holidays to the tropics you wont see either of these. These are cool liking mountain nanners.

How come you cut it down Stan?

It was blown over in the wind Penney. Too big and heavy to keep upright with so many broken roots.
But,if it comes back on a meter of trunk..great. short trunk and tall leaves are no danger to crush the surrounding plants.

What a shame Stan so lets hope it comes back as you say small trunk big leaf.

It's a monocot. like grass, right?... cut it and it's stimulated... will banana plants produce stolons?

This banana is very tough. It's difficult to get rid of until it flowers...then it dies.

I was wondering if it might encourage the offsets or pups to form around the central root or via stolons? Is the Cavendish grown in Southern Cal? I like their shape but like the fruit more so. are the flowers exceptionally pretty? If I won the lottery I think I'd build a huge greenhouse/solarium complex with a tropical wing. My fave tropical fruits are bananas, mangos and pineapple. ...ahhh dream on! ;-)

Some people have posted they have had this banana pup. I have never had that happen. The first one lived about 5 years, flowered and died in my front yard- never sent up a single pup.
This one hasn't flowered..but its not going pup,I can feel that its just wont do it.
I do Lori have an edible banana- Ice Cream. I got a bunch last year..this year all green leafs. I guess next year the largest stem with send out a bloom.
