I keep missing the corpse flower bloom at the botanical gardens which makes 'headline News' whenever it throws up a flower spike. The blooms last just a day and it may not bloom again for 10 years.

Penny,

It's a white Epiphyllum. Looks good.

I have one that hasn't flowered this year, yet. My friend who gave it to me years ago had it growing wild in the ground against his fence.

Bathgate:

The corpse flower grows here. It blooms longer than one day. However, you're correct it can take 3 to 7 years to flower again.

humm that's interesting Del. Over here the spathes begin to collapse in about 12 hours after it heats up, but some say the bloom itself can last up to 2 days. I'd still miss it though since I'm usually working.

Bathgate:

Are you talking about Amorphophallus titanum? This plant the spathe last longer than two days.

San Diego Botanical Gardens has one, when it blooms people from all over come to see it flower. It's a pretty amazing plant!

That's intersting. All my souces say 24 sometimes 36 hours max is all the plant can sustain such a huge bloom. There have been rare exceptions. How long do they last in San Diego? I've referenced the New York Botanical Garden & Chicago Botanical Garden. I'd be curious to know.

At San Diego Botanical Gardens I think it lasted around 5 days or so. It may longer because it's so close to the ocean and cooler. In heat it breaks down faster. I remember it was in a shaded spot, also.
