There's probably around 100 Gardenia shrubs planted around this pool in La Jolla, San Diego, CA. Photo taken June 1, 2018

Penny,
It depends on the variety. This may be a smaller growing variety. Some grow to 8' (2.5 m) or taller. Gardenia thunberia grows to 20' (6.1 m) tall. It's a tree.
If you're lucky enough to get Gardenia carinata (which is an incredibly beautiful tree!), it can grow to 65' (20 m). I've seen very large trees in Hawaii.

There's so many species and varieties of Gardenia. Some are really tiny, like Gardenia radicans and others are huge trees like Gardenia carinata.

I would love a big one but would have no where to store over winter. Thanks for letting me know there are different types.

Sweet aromas... I love scented plants. Interesting that the little shrubs we see on offer in spring can have relatives that grow to 20 metres! I suppose these could be propagated by cuttings or grafts?

Yes, they are done by both. Generally, the tree-form of
Gardenia jasminoides 'Mystery' is grafted.
