Thanks for the comments the Deutzia grows vigorous through the Rhododendron and needs pruning most years, going to try a few cuttings from it never had any success in the past ,think I left it to late.
For the record both are about 8 feet high and nearly as wide

I use to have Strawberry Fields Deutzia Brian I had it dug out because it was hard for me to reach to keep it cut back .
Cut the stems for rooting early in the morning on a relatively cool morning. This will ensure that the plant is well-hydrated. Use pruning shears to cut a branch about 1 inch below the second leaf node on soft wood. Choose stems that result in a cutting between 3 and 5 inches long.

Thrupennybit
thanks for info would not have left an inch below the node do you still remove the leaves from the lower node or plant with the leaves close to the soil surface ,would not have thought so they probably rot.or leave them on as you would with Clematis ???

Yes Brian you cut off the bottom as thats what they will root from but leaves on top keep and cut in half use soiless potting mix with perlite. This is what I read and done when my daughter wanted a cutting way before I had it dug out.
