Thanks, Brian! First time I've picked all 4 varieties! I had a fifth, called 'Speckled Roma', but I haven't seen any speckled tomatoes yet!

Wow, congratulations! I've tried tomatoes on my balcony but it ended up covered by a white powder resulting from infestation. Unfortunately it spread to the other plants and ended up losing a Sakura cherry tree and a red acer palmatum.

Thank you all for you comments.

Brian, the 'Speckled Roma' have not put in an appearance! All my plants have now had ripe fruit & none of them look "speckled" at all! I don't understand what could have happened to them - unless they are the tomatoes that sprouted in the church gardens! In May I took lots of spent compost to put in the church gardens instead of throwing it away. There is one plant that I noticed today that has flowers on it!!!

Thank you 3d & DD!

Amy, I suppose most people think you need lots of space to grow 20 plants of tomato (+ 12 that are in hanging baskets so perhaps that doesn't count!😀)

Aleyna, perhaps what you had was powdery mildew. though I've never seen it on tomatoes. One year I grew tomato plants in the greenhouse on Gerry's allotment together with Cucumbers. The Cucumbers got powdery mildew very badly but not a single tomato plant suffered!

I'm sorry to hear about the loss of the Cherry tree & the Acer. It's always upsetting to lose trees you've had for a number of years.

Balcony,
Tahnk you for the tip. I researched the internet and found the treatment for the fungus (oídio). I'll try to save the other plants.

I hope the treatment you have found will help save the other plants!

The 'Speckled Roma' tomatoes have now put in an appearance! They were difficult to distinguish from the 'Ukrainian Purple' as in the green stage they look very much alike! I will definitely know in a couple of weeks once they start to turn red (I hope!) but a few tomatoes now have paler green marking that I think correspond to 'Speckled Roma'.

You're welcome, Aleyna!

Over the last few days I've been harvesting many more tomatoes, in fact today I picked quite a few 'Black Cherry' & some 'Red Robins' from the hanging baskets. The day before yesterday I also picked some 'Alicante' & some 'Ukrainian Purple' as well.

I'm starting to pick them before they are ripe so as to give the remaining tomatoes time to develop &, hopefully, ripen before the weather becomes too cold.
