they sweeten with dryness... and the flavour becomes deluted when there is abundant moisture. hmmm... wonder what I'm going to get?

Hi Bathgate! no this is the original... a musk melon. the ancestor of the cantaloupe. Some interesting reading on the net about their origins and the optimum culture for growing sweet melons. I've often thought about growing watermelon as it's a passion of mine, but we don't have enough frost free days to make it feasible. I bought two little musk melon plants at the local sale and swap in May and hilled them up to warm the soil. They seemed to stand still for a few weeks and when the really hot weather hit they just took off!

I've had so-so luck growing watermelons. There is an art to it I believe.

I never knew exactly when to pick them & they would go over & moldy on me. lol.

The best cue for picking is the stem and the aroma. the circular crack around the stem means the fruit is being shed from the stem... If they are still securely attached to the stem they aren't ready. Nice ripe melons have a musky sweet odour.
