Interesting - Is it anything like a stalagmite?
7 Dec, 2018
Why?! Do they then take them home again? Maybe I will Google Mother Shipton . . .

There's a cave that does this at Matlock Bath in Derbyshire, quite a big cave. Is it limestone where this one is?.
7 Dec, 2018
Yes, I believe it is limestone. No, they don't take them away. I think they have put a stop to it now as so many people were doing it. In the little museum there are all sorts of solidified items, shoes, hats, gloves, etc left by well known people. I suppose it is a bit similar to the way stalagmites are formed.

Sad that people can't remove their petrified property! The well in Derbyshire has lots of stuff like hats etc but I don't think any of them belonged to famous people!

Gosh it's years since I've seen this. Doesn't look to have changed at all.

It looks more like a carpet than rock with water running over it, doesn't it.

At Mother Shipton's Cave. People hang things under this water fall & they become solid from all the salts dripped on them. I believe it takes about a fortnight
