Clematis Pink Montana

Gorgeous Amy. I love how you did the twining beneath. I see my 2 sisters playing 'Double-Dutch' in the driveway growing up. Did you ever play 'Doiuble Dutch'?

Amy, this is really lovely! I bought this clematis last year..mine is struggling. Any advice? It’s against a very low fence, north ish facing though. The fence is only 2 feet high. I thought once it’d gotten a little growth on it, it would meander over it and up!
I’d love it to be as prolific as yours!

Sorry to disappoint you both but this was here when we moved in last year ,we inherited it it was a lovely surprise when it bloomed .. I don't know what the game Double Dutch is Paul perhaps we call it by a different name ,is it a skipping game ?
This is on the shady side of the garage Kate it gets the sun in the afternoon .apparently Clems like their feet in the shade always plant them at least 6" deeper than the pot they are provided in and then place a brick at the base to keep the base in the shade .. I hope that helps ..

It's jumping rope but they used 2 ropes they played it all the time. Just came to mind when I saw this pic

Yes I know the skipping games I just hadn't known the Double Dutch name .. I wonder if the children still play them today ? it's probably to tame for them with all the Hi- Tech stuff they have . :o(

Good point. Double Dutch involves a certain skill level, being physically fit and well coordinated. I hardly see anyone playing it today. kinda sad.

I remember a game we use to play in the school yard when I was an infant it use to scare me it was called Mr Wolf ,in those days there only use to be about 30 children in the whole of the village school ...all the children except one stood at one side of the yard the one chosen to be Mr Wolf at the other side the aim was to reach the other side without Mr Wolf touching you if he did you were out of the game .. they use to cry who are you going to eat Mr Wolf and then run like hell Lol ...

That sounds fun for those days - almost like Dodge Ball. Instead of tagging, you''d throw the ball and the group would dodge the ball. If anyone got hit, they were out. Good times! lol. 3 misses and he was out.

Hi Bathgate, Chinese elastics or rubber bands was a bit more intricate. May be called Chinese jump rope in the USA? Lots of strings of rubber bands tied together, the “ropes” are positioned tight around the ankles.
Intricate moves are made, usually 3 players. Lots of crossing over and specific moves. :)

OK, I've seen the girls playing with huge rubber bands at recess but couldn't figure out what they were trying to do. I went to a Catholic School and for some strange reason the school was divided in half -the girls side, and the boys side and anyone found on the wrong side got wacked across the knuckles with a yard stick and you got extra homework for punishment. yeh, strange!

Was nt double dutch skipping with two ropes one turning one way and the other another way.? Your ball game here Paul where they threw the ball was called hot rice lol goodness knows why. I remember Mr Wolf Amy lol also in and out the Scottish Blues Bells seems they have altered it dusty blue bells it should be taper a raper ra per on my shoulder you are the leader.

Yes that's it Thrupennybi. Everybody played it in the School playground and on the streets. Now we have The National Double Dutch League and The International Double Dutch Federation where you can really show your stuff, but we were just having fun. I was more into football and one of the kids I played with got drafted into the Greenbay Packers in Wisconsin and did us proud.

Of course lol even over here it was footy in schools for boys or Cricket and Rugby if a boy was found skipping here it would be classed as a nancy boy.

How fantastic one of your footy friend became professional in the Green Bay Parkers they must of had a scout watching for great talent. It feels great when they do you proud like this.

What a lovely thing to inherit! glad they didn't try to remove it. I remember a GoY member who had Clematis montana across the front of her cottage. I've learned to love the Virgin's Bower that I inherited... it's doing well on the obelisk with the wisteria. I've found it starting up from seed (with help from the birds, I'm sure) in several places. I'm weeding beds and "pop" there it is. I've removed most of it and planted them together near the trellis... wonder what will happen now, as I've just decided to move the trellis. I keep getting my cart before my horse. lol..
I remember "double dutch" as a child, two ropes moving in opposite directions and very fast... to the tune of "vote, vote, vote for dear old......, who's that knocking at the door?...if it's...... let her in and we'll gave a cuppa gin and we won't vote for ...... anymore, shut the door, two by four...." lol....I don't believe I still remember that after sixy-odd years! The object was to go through as many "candidates" as you could without anyone tripping up. golly I'm old. lol...
