Silphium perfoliatum - 2019

Silphium perfoliatum - 2019 (Silphium perfoliatum)

Perennial to eight feet in sun or part shade in moisture retentive soil. Although the stems are pretty self-supporting, I prefer to give some discrete support to ensure no drunken falling about spoils the display

architecture! I have enough room for very large plants. This one looks like a candidate. I was shocked that the roots of this colonizer, found in botanical gardens, are 50 yrs. old! It's from south and central N.A., and it may not be hardy in my zone, but like other prairie perennials (like lobelia syphilitica), it may surprise me. Thanks for bringing this one to my attention, Andrewr.
