Andy: I read somewhere that you should remove the flower bud. It's sucking up all the plants energy. If you remove it, you'll get larger & more delicious bananas.

Lori,

I used to grow nice big bananas every year. The last 3 or 4 years because of the horrible drought here I haven't had any bananas. I grow 4 different varieties.

Bathgate:

Yes, I cut off the male flowers after the last hand develops on the stalk. I've been growing bananas for years...I need to get a recipe how to cook the male flowers. They cost almost $7.00 per lb at the store.

This bunch of bananas is very small. It used to have much larger flower and more hands. I counted only 5 hands on this flower stalk.

Yes, the flowers are usually very expensive in the Asian stores. I'm going to cut the male flower in a couple of days and put it into the refrigerator and attempt to cook it.

Amazing Andy! It’s good to learn about this, not something we can grow here in the garden. Really interesting.
