and put him on my umbrella. He left a pool of liquid and I thought that I'd harmed him somehow.. but from some reading I found that it might be a defense mechanism, which tastes so bad it deters birds and small animals. OR, it was a bit of venom. Very interesting, almost prehistoric, creature.

thanks ladies... I knew it must be a millipede but had never seen anything so large. They're prehistoric in origin, have been around a long time. Some are venomous, but the one in my yard is not one of those. Some varieties from the East can grow to almost a metre! He has 2 legs per segment and can have as many as 100 legs.
BTW... I had just changed the battery in my camera and had to reset the day/date... I was a little flustered and hurried and didn't realize until I'd posted the pictures that I had the wrong date...it should be 08/27/19.
