They are quite common in our area in the woods. I don't live in the woods but have some shaded areas they would like. Some years I don't see any in this stage. This is the middle stage. When they hatch, they are newts, then they leave the water to live on land a while, then they return to the pond again to live as newts. They are so pretty. I often find the newts in my pond if I need to clean it in the spring. ?They are newts which is an amphibian.
