We have acers growing in the south facing, unprotected part of the garden as well as here in the shadier area. I prune them heavily in March to take off last years growth and then again in June - just taking off this year's growth. They seem to respond well.

Ours is verging on the clay, might try one or two though in my shady side (the garden that is!)

Some get dieback whether we cosset them or treat them rough!

Absolutely beautiful, love the acers., wish I could grow them. I have only one in a tub, the purpurea palmatum, but it's growing well.
