Strelitzia nicolai

Strelitzia nicolai

It is that time of year when the big guy blooms. A friend was asking if they could get a flower for a centerpiece. I said, sure - just get a ladder that will reach 20 feet up to it. The stalk, while about 6" across, may not hold up to someone trying to climb it as it is exactly like a banana stalk.

What an exotic monster.

Since I grew this from seed, it is special to me. The black base of the flower is about 18". Can't be sure since it is so far up.

Every year you show this Wylie and every year I've still just got only a few leaves! Grew mine from seed too a lot of years ago but I think this year it can go outside for the summer. Not destined to grow in our climate so I might jack on it ever getting any bigger or even a chance of a flower. My seed came from New Zealand but I assume they're the same everywhere.

It took 11 years before I got the first flower, so I am thrilled every year that my patience was finally rewarded. This is related to bananas, so it needs the same conditions. If you put it into too big of a pot, it may grow too big to fit back indoors, but they like space to grow.
