I saw this tiny Moth or Butterfly on a Sedum leaf this morning. It really is tiny, a little bigger than my thumb nail! Perhaps your daughter would know the name. You will have to zoom in for a better view!

Thanks for looking it up ... such a little thing that I'm surprised I even saw it! I have just watered the manger baskets and a brown Moth flew out of one of them ... landed on my shoe and stayed there a while!

showed photo to Toria when she came in and immediately said Mint moth so glad I was correct. There are several that look similar but the solid bar in the underwing is the diagnostic feature really.

Thanks Josie and Sue ... it was a sweet little thing!
Thanks Sbg, I was happy to see a small blue butterfly today. They are often seen on the South Downs ... :o)

Kate, I saw it when I was taking out dead foliage from Daffs and Crocus. Probably would have missed it otherwise!

How lovely to see. I suppose a few moths do fly in the day?
We haven’t seen many butterflies yet … just the occasional small blue, brimstone and large white 🙁.

Sheila, it would appear that some Moths only fly during the day, I would not have thought that at all! This morning we had our post breakfast cuppa in the garden and saw a Speckled Wood Butterfly, pretty little one.

There are quite a lot of day flying moths but they don't look typically like what most people think of moths.
The black and red ones Burnet and Cinnabar are both day flies as are green long horns. I'll post a photo of the green longhorns as they do not look like moths at all.

It's great that we have Sbg, she knows so much about insects and wild plants, answering my question the other day amongst others. Pennywort I have in my garden..:))

You’re right Janey, we are lucky …Sbg is a reliable minefield of info on anything wild 🙂.

this is a moth and looks to be The Mint Moth, Pyrausta aurata. Common in most of the UK but rare in Scotland apparently.
Toria is out at work but I have been using the guides she has. This one is a micro moth apparently.
