I've just been watching a blog on creating negative space in shrubs. Looks like you've done just that with your pruning. I have to be brave and lift the canopy on a few shrubs this year, too.

I did it with one of the laurels and a golden juniper - gives me more planting space, I'm desperate!!! Looking now at some other shrubs...you've got me thinking!
