My cosmos weren't great either Janey & they were flattened by a tornado - it did me a favor, lol!

They are Sheila, but with all the rain, I.popped them undercover again. Actually dark plum coloured one I have as a house plant and it's doing ok..:)

Gosh a tornado Paul! I don't know what went wrong with the Cosmos this year, they were really weird!

It's a few years since I'd grown them Kate, and they were never the height they were this year and the stems were nearly like rhubarb!

I love the sedums. I'm new to them... but I've found some varieties that are just knocking my socks off this year! Same with the Cosmos! what's going on, I wonder~?

Oh thank you Lori..:)) All the rain and warmth in our Spring really pushed these on, they're more vivid than the pic shows.
So all our cosmos have been like triffids?

Mine (cosmos) have either: (a) not germinated, or (b) came up like a cornstalk (c) budded up in late August (c) flowers small and tight to the stalk..(d)produced no discernable seeds and (e) seemed extremely enticing to insects... ??? Just not a good year for them. poor things.. I'm wondering about seed for next year.. the mice will probably take care of that :-(

That is very odd Lori, yes I'll give them a miss next year. I hadn't grown them for years as it was, but they're not like I remember. I bought mine from a reputable company, along with Van Gogh sunflowers, which also were very disappointing..

We don't get tornadoes too often but they do happen here, but they aren't all like The Wizard of Oz. They are rated on the Fugita Scale from F1-F5 according to wind speed. The Wizard of Oz tornado was definitely an F5. Those are very rare but are most common in tornado alley - Kansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Texas pan handle. A storm took down an air liner in here 1975 (Eastern Airlines Flight 66. You can read about it online). After that we've had F1 or F2. They won't pick up the house but can easily flatten my cosmos. I won't be growing those again.

Sorry Paul for missing you. I can honestly say, we moan.about our weather, but nothing on your scale, thank goodness! Gale force winds, with uprooted trees and flying roof tiles, flooding in the coastal areas are our limits really, and they're bad enough if it's your home that affected. As for your flattened cosmos, well, not a lot lost if they were anything like mine..Haha!
