Datura Painting

Datura Painting

Karen Kluglein: Datura Metel

I was given a tour of a very special garden in East Hampton. Whenever a gardener is especially excited to show me something in their garden, I pay particular attention. That is what happened when I was introduced to the unusual Datura flowers. The flower is both poisonous (hallucinogenic) and medicinal. The dark, speckled, shiny stems and bumpy leaves add interest to the voluminous petals. It is all at once darkly sinister and obscenely huge as well as beautiful.

I’ve looked at your blog, Paul. It’s very interesting and informative too!this is a beautiful painting, like the others. This is definitely a dark and exotic looking flower.

Karen really is a gifted artist as well as the others in the blog. Thanks for looking at it. Amazing with certain people can do with a brush & canvas. Artists are fascinating people. They view the world differently than the rest.

I agree Sheila. I love visiting the NY Botanical Garden. Always something fun and interesting happening over there.

Klahanie I read that this is a no fuss plant and very easy to grow. They are normally grown as an annual, but they self seed quite readily in the fall. Let the seeds winter over outside in the planting bed. They grow like gangbusters in the early spring and will quickly grow to a mature plant and flower for you in one season. East Hampton isn't far from me so I may give them a try if I can source the seeds. I'll get you some too.

Thanks for the warning. Half the plants in my garden are poisonous and I already lost 1 cat because he ate the English Yew. It doesn't kill immediately but over the next few days. That makes it extremely difficult to trace. I don't know why cats go around snacking on random plants.
