Zebra plant outdoors. (Aphelandra squarrosa (Zebra plant))

A very thirsty plant and pretty much a plant for full shade I have learned.

Over here it would have to be a houseplant!

I havent tried them in the house..they might be sensitive to low humidity. Outdoors,I had a heck of a time keeping it hydrated in heat waves.

It looks great! I know it’s a tropical plant. Is it growing in the ground?

It's in the ground. I kept it well watered..in fact the cycad behind it has grown the largest leaves it has ever had because of the heavy watering for the Aphelandra under it. I think it can reach about 5' tall one day.

That would be quite a site when flowering. I’ve only seen large plants flowering in the ground in Hawaii.

Were they in shade? I would say its subtropical taking our winters pretty easily.

Partial shade, almost in full sun. Mine grew well outside, it’s the alkaline soil and water that caused it problems. I can’t remember if I sold it or gave it away. That’s what happens when one has too many plants. Lol

Attractive leaves, Stan. Its nice to see one outdoors. Looks like you've got it planted under the canopy of other plants, which is best as you say.
What's the smaller shiny green leaved plant in front?

Thats a Bromeliad Kate that would in more sun be red. In the pot is a cutting of Philodendron 'evansii' the largest leafed Philodendron that can be grown outdoors in California- 4' leaves are common and really thriving plants even larger. As you can see..my gallon potted plant is years away-ha.

Thanks for the info, Stan, it’s got me researching.

Try one Kate, They are mountain tropicals so can take cool winter rooms. Even prefer it. What they hate is going dry so keep watered at all times and best to keep a saucer under them. I might add more in other shady spots of the garden- near my garden hose!
