Early blooming. One and only flower this year, but for me, the flowers of this rhododendron are of secondary importance. It has a distinctive cinnamon/rust indumentum on the underside of the leaves which is the main reason for me to love it. Also, new leaves unfold white.
The story I read is :
It came from seed sent by Sir J. Hooker from India.
The original plant ( form of R. arboreum) is at Carclew. 30' high
Sir Charles Lemon inherited the Carclew Estate, Cornwall in 1824.

It's always interesting to know the background story of the plants we grow, thanks for telling it :)
