Inherited Camellia's first flower

Inherited Camellia's first flower

It is a large plant (tree) close to out house entrance.
Interestingly it developed this one flower while all the others are in quite tight buds. It lost lots of buds. I assume because of the big freeze we had this winter.
It is a interesting plant as the flowers can be pure white, pure red, pink and everything in between. Although, most flowers are like the one in the picture or solid pink,

How unusual to have so many different shades on one Camellia. This current bloom is very pretty.

I do see lots of buds on that tree.

The camellias here start to bloom in fall and winter. They must be planted on the north side of a house, building or they will burn up.

There’s a camellia in my neighborhood that is planted on the northwest side of a house, it’s probably about 16 to 18 ft tall and it looks pretty good. It does have some burn on some leaves, though. I’m surprised it looks so good. Camellias absolutely despise Santa Ana wind season (fall and winter) here. The temps can be over 90 to 100 degrees f (38 c) with 2 to 5 percent humidity.
